Aramark debuts touch-screen Burger Studio

PHILADELPHIA Aramark Corp. is debuting a new burger concept at its university and college accounts this fall that allows students to design their own meals using electronic touch-screen-ordering devices.

The kiosk concept, called the Burger Studio, will offer students the opportunity to create made-to-order Angus, chicken or veggie burgers that can be customized with a variety of more than 30 toppings. The sandwiches are designed by the customer, piece by piece, on the kiosk’s touch screen, officials of the contract foodservice provider said Thursday. The average check for the concept totals between $4 and $6, the company said.

Afocus group comprised of hundreds of students from colleges that Aramark serves helped to create the concept, its name, design and even the uniforms staff members wear.

“Our goal is to inspire students’ creativity and individuality,” Karen Parker, associate vice president of marketing for Aramark’s higher education division, said. “Burger Studio allows students to create a customized meal they want using touch-screen technology that is already part of their everyday lives.”

The kiosks, which have been designed with sustainable and green materials, are opening this fall at the University of Delaware, University of Hartford, Middle Tennessee State University, Missouri Western State University and Springfield College. Additional locations are expected to open next year and Aramark said it planned to expand the brand to other contract divisions as well.

The popularity of burger concepts has also prompted Sodexo, the Gaithersburg, Md.-based contract foodservice provider, to announce in July the debut of the Original Burger Company, a quick-serve, made-to-order burger concept, at a number of its college and university accounts. Sodexo said it plans to roll the concept out to other segments its serves, including corporate dining and healthcare foodservice.
