BK adds more healthful kids' meals

MIAMI Burger King Corp. said Wednesday it has expanded the number of items on its Kids Meal menu that comply with its new nutrition criteria for children.

The three new meals bring Burger King’s total to four that meet the company’s Positive Steps program. The meals are part of the company’s pledge through the Council of Better Business Bureaus' Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative that calls for the advertising to children younger than 12 only meals that contain no more than 560 calories, less than 30 percent of calories from fat and no more than 600 milligrams of sodium, among other standards.

Burger King's three new meals are:

  • atwo-pack of BK Burger Shots with Apple Fries, caramel dipping sauce and apple juice
  • ahamburger, Apple Fries, dipping sauce and apple juice
  • four-piece chicken tenders, Apple Fries, dipping sauce and fat-free milk

Burger King introduced its first kids' meal that meets the new criteria last summer. That meal includes macaroni and cheese, Apple Fries, dipping sauce and fat-free milk.

Russ Klein, Burger King’s president for global marketing, strategy and innovation, said, “At Burger King Corp., product innovation is a top priority and our new BK Kids Meals are a direct result of our efforts to innovate, review and reformulate existing kid favorites.”

Elaine Kolish, director of the CBBB’s Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative, said, “Burger King Corp.’s commitment to product innovation and reformulation is an example of how the food industry can help make positive changes to existing menu items in order to provide nutritious and flavorful options that appeal to kids.”
