California Cafe's parent buys Freebirds burrito chain

EMERYVILLE Calif. Full-service specialist Tavistock Restaurants said it purchased the 19-unit Freebirds World Burrito fast-casual chain last week. Terms were not disclosed.

Known for its signature Monster Burrito, College Station, Texas-based Freebirds specializes in custom burritos and other Mexican-themed dishes. Its acquisition brings a fast-casual growth vehicle to Tavistock’s portfolio, which includes seven casual and fine-dining concepts in 10 states.

Barry Goff, Tavistock chief executive, said the company plans to grow the Freebirds brand in Texas and elsewhere.

Tavistock also recently launched a new fine-dining concept called Zed 451 with two locations in Chicago and a third expected later this year. Two more Zed 451 locations are scheduled to open in Florida.

In addition, Tavistock operates six California Café restaurants, six Napa Valley Grilles, two Alcatraz Brewing Co. units, and the single locations of Blackhawke Grille in Danville, Calif., Café del Rey in Marina del Rey, Calif., and Horizons in Sausalito, Calif.
