Carl's showcases drink, burger LTOs

CARPINTERIA Calif. Carl's Jr. is featuring a new Angus burger and new drinkable desserts as limited-time menu choices, starting today.

The Teriyaki Burger features a patty of Angus beef garnished with red onion, tomato, lettuce and mayonnaise. It is topped with teriyaki sauce, Swiss cheese and a slice of grilled pineapple. The burger can be purchased in single, double, or Six Dollar Burger varieties, priced at $2.89, $3.89 and $4.59, respectively.

In addition, the 1,087-unit quick-service chain is extending its drink line for a limited time with the addition of OrangeSicle shakes and malts. The treats, starting at $2.99, feature a mix of orange creme syrup, vanilla ice cream and milk, and are served in a clear cup with a domed lid and whipped cream topping.

Pricing for all of Carl's Jr.'s menu items varies regionally.

Carl's Jr. is following in the footsteps of its sister chain Hardee's by using menu nostalgia to attract customers. Earlier this month Hardee's added the Patty Melt Thickburger, a variation on the classic patty melt, consisting of a 1/3-pound Angus beef patty topped with grilled onions and melted Swiss cheese, served on grilled rye bread. In April the 1,906-unit chain debuted the Burger Chef Big Shef as a limited-time offer at select units. The burger-- which featured two charbroiled patties, American cheese, shredded lettuce and Burger Chef's signature Big Shef sauce--was a signature of the Burger Chef quick-service chain in the 1970s and 1980s, before it was ultimately absorbed into Hardee's.

Both Carl's Jr. and Hardee's are subsidiaries of CKE Restaurants Inc., based here. CKE also operates and franchises 96 La Salsa Fresh Mexican Grill restaurants.
