Chefs Achatz, Adrìa honored by CIA

NEW YORK The Culinary Institute of America honored three influential members of the foodservice community at its annual leadership awards gala on Thursday.

The event, emceed by actress Ruta Lee and held at Cipriani 42nd St. in midtown Manhattan, showcased the contributions of renowned chefs Ferran Adrià, of El Bulli restaurant in Catalonia, Spain, Grant Achatz of Alinea in Chicago, and John J. Profaci Sr., president and founder of Colavita USA, which manufactures Italian extra virgin olive oil. All received Augie awards, which are named after famed culinarian Auguste Escoffier.

Adrià was named Chef of the Year, and Achatz received the Alumnus of the Year honor. The two are famous for their innovative contributions to the molecular gastronomy movement.

Profaci was tapped as the newest inductee to the CIA’s Hall of Fame. He was honored for introducing the North American market to the importance and healthful benefits associated with extra virgin olive oil.
