Chick-fil-A sales rise in 2009

ATLANTA Chick-fil-A reported an 8.6-percent jump in 2009 systemwide sales on the strength of 83 new restaurants and positive same-store sales.

The 1,480-unit chain posted sales of $3.2 billion in 2009, the first time it surpassed the $3 billion mark, Chick-fil-A said Tuesday. Same-store sales increased 2.5 percent in 2009.

The increase in annual sales was Chick-fil-A’s 42nd year of consecutive sales growth, the company said.

“Chick-fil-A has truly been blessed to have had another year of sales growth during these difficult economic times,” said Dan Cathy, the company’s president and chief executive. “While we are by no means immune to the economic challenges our country is facing, we do believe we will remain healthy as long as we stay committed to the qualities that have shaped the Chick-fil-A brand: providing exceptional customer service and unmatched product quality to every customer on every visit.”

In 2009, Chick-fil-A opened 69 stand-alone restaurants, one mall location and 13 licensed outlets.

This year, the chain said it plans to open 78 new locations, which will include 66 stand-alone locations, two mall restaurants and 10 licensed outlets.

Menu introductions planned for this year include a yogurt parfait and a new coffee roast, which both debuted in January, and a spicy chicken sandwich that will be rolled out in June.
