Dairy Queen unveils new Oreo Cookie Jar Blizzard

MINNEAPOLIS International Dairy Queen said Thursday it would introduce a new Blizzard flavor, the Oreo Cookie Jar Blizzard, and a special offer to mark its Sept. 1 launch.

Anybody who joins Dairy Queen’s Blizzard Fan Club during September will receive a coupon good for $1 off the regular price of an Oreo Cookie Jar Blizzard, in addition to the standard buy-one-get-one-free offer given to new club members.

The new Blizzard, made with the chain’s soft serve, Oreo cookies, chocolate chip cookie dough and hot fudge, will be offered at all Dairy Queen and DQ Grill & Chill locations in the United States. Oreo is one of the world’s best-selling cookies and is the most popular flavor of Blizzard, said chief brand officer Michael Keller.

“When you think about cookies, Oreo immediately comes to mind,” Keller said. “We’ve given an intriguing new twist to our already incredibly popular Oreo Blizzard Treat by adding more ‘cookie jar.’ With an added bonus for newly signed members of the Blizzard Fan Club, this flavor should be a sales leader.”

Since starting the Blizzard Fan Club in 2005, Minneapolis-based International Dairy Queen has grown the club to 2.2 million members and recently launched an updated website at www.BlizzardFanClub.com. The signature frozen treat was invented in 1985, and the brand plans several large celebrations next year for the Blizzard’s 25th anniversary.

The average retail price of the Oreo Cookie Jar Blizzard is $3.09 for the 12-ounce version, $3.49 for the 16-ounce version, and $3.99 for the 21-ounce version. The new flavor also can be made into an ice cream cake for birthdays and other celebrations.

Dairy Queen’s previous Blizzard flavor of the month had been the Girl Scouts Thin Mint Cookie Blizzard, which blended the chain’s soft serve with Girl Scout Thin Mints and crème de menthe topping. The Blizzard flavor figured prominently into Dairy Queen’s latest charitable initiative, the Miracle Treat Day fundraiser on Aug. 13. The chain donated $1 of every Blizzard sold during the day to Children’s Miracle Network. In 2008, the event raised more than $4.5 million for Children’s Miracle Network in one day.

International Dairy Queen operates or franchises more than 5,600 restaurants worldwide.
