DSE gets $8M to expand Maria Maria

WALNUT CREEK Calif. Dudum Sports & Entertainment Corp.’s four-unit Maria Maria chain has received an $8 million capital boost from San Francisco-based investment firm True Capital Management, officials said Thursday.

The partnership will fuel the planned expansion of celebrity-theme restaurant operator DSE’s newest brand, Maria Maria. The concept is based on a hit song by guitarist Carlos Santana, who is a “creative consultant” for the casual “Nuevo Mexican” chain, the company said.

Maria Maria has units open in Walnut Creek and Mill Valley, Calif., as well as in Tempe, Ariz., and Austin, Texas. Locations are scheduled to open in Boca Raton, Fla.; San Diego; Scottsdale, Ariz.; and Houston in coming months. Two additional locations, not yet announced, are scheduled to open in 2009.

As a result of the partnership, DSE subsidiary Maria Maria Holdings has added two True Capital principals to its board: Heather Goodman and Doug Raetz.

True Capital is an investment advisory firm that specializes in cash management, lending and asset management for high-net-worth individuals, including sports and entertainment celebrities.

DSE is known for its upscale eateries that license the brands of sports and entertainment luminaries. In addition to Maria Maria, the company operates six restaurants under the Bing Crosby’s, Joe DiMaggio’s Italian Chophouse and McCovey’s brands.

“This is a very exciting partnership for our company,” said Jeff Dudum, DSE chief executive. “With True Capital as our partners, there is no doubt in my mind that we will be able to grow Maria Maria into a national brand across the United States for quality Mexican cuisine and entertainment.”
