Dunkin' Donuts to open its first 'green' unit

ST. PETERSBURG Fla. As part of its commitment to lower its carbon emissions footprint, Dunkin’ Brands Inc. broke ground today here on a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, certified Dunkin' Donuts unit.

The store, which is owned and operated by franchisee Robert Aziz, will be the quick-service chain’s first “green” building. The store will feature insulated concrete foam walls to reduce air-conditioning use by 40 percent, energy-efficient lighting, low flush toilets and the use of well water.

“By building our first LEED certified restaurant in St. Petersburg, we look forward to É playing an important role in the daily lives of the people who live and work here,” said Jon Luther, president and chief executive of Dunkin’ Brands. “If we can operate in a way that reduces our environmental footprint by reinforcing our core values, we are playing a small but very important role in making the world a better place to both work and live.”

The store is expected to open in September.

In January, Dunkin’ Brands announced a series of ecofriendly initiatives and business practices that it plans to undertake at its Dunkin' Donuts and Baskin-Robbins stores. Other initiatives outlined at that time included the modification of current stores to make them more ecofriendly and the sponsorship of carpooling and recycling programs for the public.

Canton, Mass.-based Dunkin' Brands franchises more than 13,000 Dunkin' Donuts and Baskin-Robbins stores worldwide.
