FDA recalls canned beans on botulism fears

WASHINGTON The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning that some canned beans sold under various private labels to restaurants and on-site accounts may carry the risk of botulism and should be isolated from other food supplies.

The warning extends to 26 brands and 63 products, the agency said. Included are green beans, garbanzo beans, Mexican-style chili beans and dark red kidney beans. All were packed by New Era Canning Co. of New Era, Mich.

Information about the specific items and brands being recalled is available from the FDA here.

Botulism is a sometimes fatal disease that is caused by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium.
