Fred Thompson to address NRA convention

WASHINGTON "Law & Order" star and former U.S. senator Fred Thompson—regarded by some as a dark-horse candidate for the U.S. presidency—has been booked as a featured speaker for the National Restaurant Association's annual mega-convention in Chicago in May.

Thompson will speak about his multifaceted career in an address entitled, "Traveling in Strange Circles – From Watergate to Hollywood to the United States Senate to Law & Order," the association said Thursday.

Thompson rose to national attention in the 1970s as a counsel to the so-called Ervin Committee, the U.S. Senate panel that investigated the Watergate Scandal. Its findings led to the resignation of Richard Nixon as President.

Afterward, Thompson returned to private practice, but was asked to play himself in a small-budget movie called "Marie," based on a corruption case he had handled. That on-screen performance led to roles in such major films as "The Hunt for Red October" and "Die Hard II."

Thompson, a Republican, was elected as a U.S. senator from his home state of Tennessee. Later, he joined the staff of the NBC hit television series, "Law & Order," playing a district attorney.

He still serves in that role, but pundits have speculated that Thompson may be considering a run for the presidency as the Republican Party's candidate.

Thompson will speak at the 2007 Restaurant, Hotel-Motel Show here on Monday, May 20 at Chicago's McCormick Place. The show runs from May 19 to May 22.
