Ky. town votes to keep alcohol sales, disappointing prohibitionists elsewhere

BURNSIDE Ky. Residents here voted Tuesday to keep a law permitting alcohol sales in restaurants, an apparent blow to anti-alcohol forces that had hoped a vote to repeal the law would encourage similar action throughout Kentucky.

The vote was 227-104 in favor of alcohol sales in restaurants, which voters first approved in 2004. Under state law, a new vote can be called three years after the original one.

Opponents of selling alcohol in restaurants, who said the sales could lead to more drunken driving and other crimes, were disappointed by the results, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader.

Restaurant owners and city officials, however, were relieved that they would not have to find new ways to replace revenue that would have been lost if the law had been repealed, the paper reported.
