Lexington, Ky., operators to post color-coded health dept. scores

LEXINGTON Ky. Restaurant owners here and in the surrounding county will be required to post their most recent local health department scores prominently in their restaurants, starting May 14. The new policy, which the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department passed April 14, will issue reports of scores 85 and higher in large, green numbers, and scores of 84 or below, often indicating critical violations, in red.

The department re-evaluates restaurants that earn red scores within 30 days, said Jessica Cobb, the department’s environmental health and protection manager, in a statement. Unless a patron files a complaint with the health department, routine inspections take place twice a year.

The Kentucky Restaurant Association has no objection to the posting, said Stacy Roof, president. “I think our restaurants have a good relationship with the health departments, which have done similar things elsewhere in Kentucky,” she said. “It hasn’t been a good or bad thing.”

In Louisville, the state’s largest city, restaurants must display a letter grade from the city’s health department.
