Luby's cuts prices to lure in customers

HOUSTON Luby’s Inc. said it has lowered the prices on more than 100 items, in many cases more than a dollar, as it tries to bolster traffic at its 120-unit cafeteria chain.

Luby's also said it would feature a "Dinner Deal" promotion after 4:30 p.m. through the end of the summer that allows customers to buy one combo meal and get another at half price. A combo meal includes a regular entree portion, two sides and a roll.

“Our customers have told us it’s getting harder and harder to make ends meet, and we’ve listened,” said Chris Pappas, Luby’s president and chief executive. “Our aim is to allow people the opportunity to dine out more often.”

Last month, Luby's reported an 8.9-percent drop in same-store sales for its May-ended third quarter. Pappas said at the time the company would adjust prices to reverse declining traffic trends.

Earlier this summer, many Luby's locations shaved prices on the chain's popular Luann Platter, which includes a reduced-sized entree, two sides and a roll.

Most of Luby's cafeterias are located in Texas.
