McDonald's expected to test Angus Third Pounders in Northeast next

OAK BROOK Ill. McDonald's is expected to extend its test of one-third-pound Angus burgers into the Northeast, but a spokesperson would not identify specific markets. Three versions of the Angus Third Pounder have been tested in about 600 restaurants in Southern California for the past few months.

The test expansion follows the rollouts of Angus and other premium burgers in recent years by such rival chains as Burger King, Carl's Jr. and Hardee's, the last two owned by CKE Restaurants of Carpinteria, Calif. Hardee's just launched its newest version, a Patty Melt Thickburger, featuring a one-third-pound beef patty topped with grilled onions and melting Swiss cheese on grilled rye bread. It sells for $2.99 or $4.79 in a combo meal with fries and a soft drink.

Served on a sesame-seed-topped roll that is denser than other McDonald's sandwich rolls, the Angus burgers' $3.99 selling price is about $1.60 more than a Big Mac. Calorie-wise, the Angus Third Pounder ranges from 720 to 860, compared to 540 for the Big Mac.
