Minn. meatpacker recalls 188,000 pounds of beef

ROCHESTER Minn. The Rochester Meat Co. here has recalled around 188,000 pounds of ground beef products because they may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.

The recalled beef products were produced between Oct. 30 and Nov. 6 and shipped to foodservice distributors and establishments nationwide, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service. None of the recalled beef was sold in grocery stores or other retailers.

Each box of the recalled beef bears the establishment number "Est. 8999" inside the USDA mark of inspection. A list of all the products being recalled and their lot numbers is available here.

The recall was issued after health officials reported five illnesses in Wisconsin and one in California, the FSIS said.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reported Monday that San Diego County officials were working to contact restaurant chain owners in the area who may have purchased products from Rochester Meat, after a 17-year-old girl became sick in December. She did not require hospitalization and has since recovered, the report said.

Those with questions about the recall should contact Rochester Meat's quality assurance manager Michelle Risius at 507-529-4759.
