NYC plans dining week to boost traffic in theater district

NEW YORK A new weeklong program will offer discounted dining at restaurants in Manhattan’s theater district to help reverse the sales downturn affecting operators since a stagehand strike virtually brought the curtain down on most Broadway productions.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg; NYC & Company, the city’s tourism agency; and the Times Square Alliance today announced the Dining in the District program, which will run Nov. 17-25 and offer a 15-percent discount on lunch or dinner to all patrons at more than 25 participating restaurants. The offer, however, will not be available on Thanksgiving Day.

The stagehand strike began Nov. 10 and has had a significant economic impact on area businesses, according to the League of American Theatres and Producers. The league estimates losses between $2 million and $17 million per day.

The area might see some relief as the stagehands’ union, Local 1, and the League of American Theatres and Producers are to resume talks Saturday morning, according to a report by The New York Times.

Alist of restaurants participating in the Dining in the District program is available online at www.nyc.gov, www.nycvisit.com or www.timessquarenyc.org.
