Packaging manufacturers cautiously optimistic about 2009, report says

FALLS CHURCH Va. —Manufacturers of single-use foodservice packaging in North America appear to be cautiously optimistic about the state of the industry, according to the annual Foodservice Packaging Industry Survey published by the Foodservice Packaging Institute.

The survey, which gathers information and opinions from foodservice packaging manufacturers and suppliers in North America and Europe, revealed that 42 percent of foodservice packaging manufacturers expect sales volumes will be better in 2009 than in the previous year. That figure, however, is down significantly from 73 percent in 2008. —Manufacturers of single-use foodservice packaging in North America appear to be cautiously optimistic about the state of the industry, according to the annual Foodservice Packaging Industry Survey published by the Foodservice Packaging Institute.

The survey also found that 58 percent of respondents in North America predict their profits this year will be better than they were last year. Slightly more than half of manufacturers in North America said they expect to buy new machinery this year, with 25 percent saying they are planning to buy used machinery.
