Patina hits the slopes in new partnership

LOS ANGELES The operators of the Mammoth Mountain ski resort have announced a partnership with Patina Restaurant Group to manage foodservice operations at the alpine complex in central California.

Patina Restaurant Group took over foodservice last fall at the resort, which is located on the eastern Sierra Nevada mountain range, but company officials are planning a complete overhaul of dining at the complex, which includes two fine-dining restaurants, four casual eateries, three food courts and various snack bars. The Patina group also will upgrade catering at the resort’s conference centers.

“We want to make it more of a dining destination resort,” said Patrick Casey, Patina Restaurant Group’s director of operations.

Casey noted that the five-year plan includes the possibility of adding more Patina-operated dining facilities.

While the past ski season was considered a transition period, during which Patina Restaurant Group upgraded menus overall, the next ski season in November will bring a second phase of changes, including an expansion of the Mill Cafe, and renovations of the Mountainside Grill and the Yodler.

The partnership is the first of its kind for the bicoastal Patina Restaurant Group, which has headquarters in Los Angeles and New York. The company is typically known for developing restaurant and catering operations for cultural centers and museums, including the flagship restaurant Patina at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, Rock Center Cafe at Rockefeller Center in New York, and The Grand Tier Restaurant at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

Mammoth Mountain is owned by Starwood Capital Group Global LLC, based in Greenwich, Conn. Starwood also is planning several new projects at the resort, including new “ski-in/ski-out” luxury townhouses, a new base lodge with hotel rooms, restaurants and a private club, and an expansion of retail, restaurant and residential space at the Village at Mammoth.
