Popeyes calls Pay Day promo a success

ATLANTA Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen officials said Friday that operators participating in the chain’s Pay Day promotion two days earlier had sold more than three times their daily average chicken volume, exceeding expectations for revenues and customer counts.

The national promotion was held April 22 and offered Popeyes’ signature, eight-piece, Bonafide chicken item for $4.99 at participating units of the 1,922-unit quick-service chicken chain.

“These days, many people are feeling like the month outlasts the paycheck,” said Cheryl Bachelder, Popeyes’ chief executive. “We really hit a sweet spot with consumers and received an overwhelming response. It was our way of saying thank you, paying our customers back for their continued support.”

Despite the promotion’s success, however, some operators appeared to have problems dealing with the increased traffic at their stores. According to published reports, franchisees in Wichita, Kan., and Rochester, N.Y., ran out of the product before the daylong promotion ended, angering those customers who were not able to purchase the item.

Aspokeswoman for Popeyes said the chain is looking into repeating the promotion sometime “in the future, but there’s no definitive date set.”
