Quiznos' latest value weapon: $3 Bullet sub

DENVER As the restaurant value wars rage on, Quiznos has added a $3 sandwich option to its arsenal with the introduction of the Toasty Bullet.

With the new sandwich, the more than 4,500-unit Quiznos extends its menu offerings priced at $5 or less, which already include $5 large "Everyday Value" subs, $4 foot-long Toasty Torpedoes and $2 flatbread Sammies.

Ashorter version of the Toasty Torpedoes that Quiznos launched in the spring, the 8-inch Toasty Bullet is made with ciabatta bread and wrapped in a paper sleeve for portability, the chain said Monday. The new sandwich is also offered in the same five varieties as the Torpedo: Italian, Big Kahuna Tuna, Pesto Turkey, Turkey Club, and Beef, Bacon & Cheddar.

Denver-based Quiznos has had to compete with sandwich rival Subway and its popular $5 Footlong, which has set off a flurry of similarly priced promotions at other quick-service chains.

At the beginning of the year, Quiznos redesigned its menu boards and pricing structure to offer more sandwiches for under $5. More recently, KFC has jumped on the bandwagon with $5 Fill-Up Boxes, and Pizza Hut last month debuted a value menu of four items priced between $5 and $6. Smaller chains also are joining in, such the 20-unit Pat & Oscar's, which debuted $5 individual pizzas last week.

Quiznos reported that a recent survey of 1,001 adults conducted on behalf of the sandwich chain found that consumers spend an average of $5.60 on lunch every day, with nearly 60 percent spending less than $5 a day. The study, by Opinion Research Corp., also showed that the majority of respondents would prefer to spend $3 on a sandwich, rather than on a magazine or an iced coffee.

“We recognize that our customers want delicious flavor and high-quality ingredients, but we also know that in this economy, they need a tasty price,” said Trey Hall, Quiznos' chief marketing officer.
