Restaurant chains unleash holiday offers

The Thanksgiving weekend has opened the floodgates for restaurant operators across the country to make merry with limited-time offers for the holidays.

On Monday, IHOP debuted its new Holiday Hotcakes line with four new flavors: gingerbread pancakes, spiced with ginger and covered with powdered sugar, whipped topping and holiday sprinkles; eggnog pancakes layered with vanilla cream spiked with cinnamon and nutmeg and topped with whipped topping, cinnamon sugar and a drizzle of butter rum sauce; pecan pie pancakes featuring buttermilk pancakes layered with pecan pie filling and served with whipped topping and glazed pecans; and pumpkin pancakes, inspired by the pie, with whipped topping.

Prices for the Holiday Hotcakes start at $4.99 and are available a la carte or part of a combination meal through Jan. 3 at participating locations.

Jack in the Box Inc., based in San Diego, said Monday it would offer half-price holiday discounts for its milk shakes — including new seasonal additions: Egg Nog and Pumpkin Pie shakes. Between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., the price for a shake will be $1.25 plus tax for a regular and $1.50 plus tax for a large at participating restaurants. The discount is good every day through Dec. 28.

“From holiday shopping to cramming for final exams, there’s so much going on at this time of year,” said Tammy Bailey, division vice president of menu marketing and promotions for the 2,200-unit chain. “Add the impact of a worrisome economy and it’s no wonder consumers are feeling a little stressed. We think everyone deserves a break, including a price break.”

The 530-unit Krispy Kreme chain also is getting into the spirit with new holiday LTOs and the return of its snowman-shaped doughnuts. Other new flavors for the holidays include glazed doughnuts with white icing and a gingerbread crunch topping; white-iced rings with red drizzle; and chocolate-iced rings with holiday sprinkles. The limited-time offers, which are priced at 99 cents each or $6.99 for a dozen, are available at participating domestic locations through Dec. 25.

In addition, the Winston-Salem, N.C.-based chain said Monday it is bringing back its seasonal holiday gift tags, which include a coupon for a free doughnut during the month of January. Customers get 12 gift tags with each purchase of a dozen doughnuts.

This week’s new offerings join a slew of holiday-inspired items introduced before the holiday weekend.

Last week, Burlington, Vt.-based Bruegger’s Enterprises Inc. rolled out two new sweet pastries: a Cinnamon Roll Bagel and bite-sized Cinn-ful Bits.

The Cinnamon Roll Bagel features a soft dough combined with brown sugar, cinnamon and vanilla, and topped with a drizzle of vanilla icing for a recommended $1.79 at participating locations throughout the 292-unit chain.

The Cinn-ful Bits also are made from the soft dough, which is rolled in cinnamon sugar, and served five to an order for a recommended $1.29.

Dunkin Donuts, based in Canton, Mass., introduced the limited-time flavor of Peppermint Mocha Latte, served hot or cold, available through the end of December for a recommended $1.99 for a small.

Available starting Tuesday is the new Candy Cane Chill at Dairy Queen, a peppermint-flavored version of the 5,600-unit chain’s Blizzard, featuring a blend of soft serve, candy cane pieces and chocolate chunks. The dish is available through December for the recommended price of $3.09 for 12 ounces, $3.49 for 16 ounces, and $3.99 for 21 ounces.

Earlier this fall, the Red Mango frozen yogurt chain rolled out a Pumpkin Spice yogurt, which is served with a free topping of graham cracker crumbs. It is available through Dec. 31 throughout the Dallas-based chain’s 50 stores.
