Ruby Tuesday admits stunt as new look debuts

MARYVILLE Tenn. This should come as no surprise, but that restaurant that Ruby Tuesday blew up live on its website Tuesday was a fake.

The chain had promised to destroy its last old-style restaurant to promote its new look, and it invited consumers to watch the demolition on its website.

Instead of destroying a Ruby Tuesday restaurant, the engineers made a mistake and blew up “Cheeky’s Bar & Grill,” supposedly the competition but actually a scale model in a Hollywood studio.

“We were joshing you a little, and we hope you’ll forgive us,” Ruby Tuesday said in a statement.

The 900-plus-unit chain used the stunt as a viral campaign to draw attention to the changes it has made in the menu and restaurant design. A new marketing campaign titled “It’s a brand new Tuesday” is promoting Ruby Tuesday’s reimaging.
