On Wednesday Applebee's restaurants gave veterans and active-duty members of the military their choice of a free entrŽe from a list of six menu favorites. Julia Stewart, chief executive of parent company DineEquity Inc., said last week that she expected the promotion would result in record traffic for the casual-dining chain.

Several other restaurant chains honored veterans with specials on Wednesday, including Krispy Kreme, Uno Chicago Grill and Outback Steakhouse.

Outback's parent company, OSI Restaurant Partners LLC, also continued its tradition of visiting American troops overseas and serving them Bloomin' Onions and other signature menu items from its restaurants.

Meanwhile, McCormick & Schmick's Seafood Restaurants hosted its annual Veterans Appreciation Event on Sunday, offering veterans free entrŽes at lunch and dinner. The 2009 celebration marked the 11th year for the event.

In some cases, customers treated veterans to a free meal. When 25 Marines and the commander of the USS New York dined at the Oak Room in New York City, an anonymous guest picked up the hefty tab, according to a representative from the restaurant.
