Taco Bell offers free tacos on Facebook

Chain: Giveaway thanks fans for loyalty over beef suit

Taco Bell launched a taco giveaway Tuesday for its fans on Facebook, just weeks after defending itself against charges that its taco meat isn’t beefy enough.

Calling it the “world’s largest free taco offer,” Taco Bell said fans who “like” Taco Bell’s Facebook page can print a coupon for one free Crunchy Seasoned Beef Taco, which typically sell for about 99 cents.

Taco Bell came under fire last month after a lawsuit alleged that the chain falsely advertised as beef a taco filling that includes “extenders” and other non-meat substances. Taco Bell countered the charges with a series of ads in major U.S. newspapers, offering “the truth” about its seasoned beef with a detailed account of ingredients used.

“Throughout the beef class-action lawsuit, the response and enthusiasm from our Facebook community has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Greg Creed, chief executive of Taco Bell. “We found it only fitting to reward these 5.4 million fans and a friend with a free taco. It’s our way of saying thanks for their loyalty and support.”

The 5,600-unit Taco Bell is a subsidiary of Louisville, Ky.-based Yum! Brands Inc., which also owns KFC and Pizza Hut.
