Tim Hortons' U.S. division rolls payment tech

News

OAKVILLE Ontario The 375 U.S. branches of the Tim Hortons coffee-and-snack chain, based here, have deployed to counters and drive-thru lanes credit and gift-card reader technology from VeriFone Holdings Inc., VeriFone said.

"Our customers are increasingly reliant on payment cards for everyday purchases and VeriFone's payment solutions will enable us to accommodate their preferences with faster payment options," said Chris Laganos, Tim Hortons senior vice president of  U.S. operations.

According to representatives of VeriFone, with offices in San Jose, Calif., among other cities, the  rollout to Tim Hortons' U.S. stores involved approximately 1,000 Vx 570 systems that work with both dial-up and "always-on"  connections; a deployment to more than 2,100 of the chain's Canadian establishments began last summer. They said Tim Hortons initiated the technology rollout to support credit card and contactless payments and to convert from paper-based gift certificates to the chain's newer QuickPay Tim Card format.
