Tyson Foods, Ecolab disclose efforts to reach goals for sustainability, environmental action

Both Tyson Foods and Ecolab Inc. have issued reports concerning their sustainability and environmental-stewardship efforts.

Richard L. Bond, president and chief executive of Springdale, Ark.-based Tyson Foods, said, “We believe sustainability is essentially doing the right thing, whether it involves protecting natural resources, creating alternative energy or feeding the hungry.”

Dr. Bruce Cords, vice president of Environment, Food Safety and Public Health for St. Paul, Minn.-based Ecolab, said, “Sustainability is a critical part of our business at Ecolab, from new-product development to the efficiency of our daily operations and those of our customers.”

Tyson reported on several of the company’s sustainability goals, including:

The continued implementation of water conservation measures. Over the past two years, Tyson reduced water usage by 15 percent per pound of finished product.

Through alliances with other firms, Tyson plans to produce as much as 250 million gallons of renewable fuel each year from animal fat over the next three or four years.

Continued advancements in the sustainability of products and services.

Progress in managing manufacturing impact. Last year the company achieved 5-percent reductions in both water and energy usage in U.S. plants and a 17-percent reduction in waste-water discharge while boosting production.
