U.S. Foodservice vet John Cabot dies

ROSEMONT Ill. John Cabot, senior vice president of national sales and marketing for distribution giant U.S. Foodservice Corp., died Tuesday after battling cancer. He was 61.

Cabot, who focused on health care feeding, was a member of Healthcare Foodservice Management, a national organization for hospital foodservice specialists. He was the inspiration for and first recipient of HFM’s John Cabot — Making a Difference Award, which was bestowed upon him last year at the group’s annual leadership conference. The award was created “as a way to recognize future leaders who demonstrate sustained and selfless service,” officers of the organization said.

Mary Keysor, a former HFM president, called Cabot a mentor to many and a tremendous friend to the organization.

“So many projects and programs exist and have been improved because of his participation,” she said.

In addition to his participation with HFM, Cabot also was involved with the American Society for Healthcare Foodservice Administrators, or ASHFSA

“John was a special friend of ASHFSA and a pioneer in this industry,” said current president Bill Notte. “He will long be remembered for his contributions. His passing represents the loss of an amazing professional and human being.”

Alongtime veteran of the industry, Cabot originally worked for Kraft Foodservice, where he oversaw the formation of Baxter Healthcare, a division specializing in acute healthcare dietary products. In 2001, U.S. Foodservice acquired the successor company to Baxter, Alliant Foodservice.

Cabot is survived by his mother, Dina; his wife, Jill; two daughters, two stepsons; one grandson; and four brothers.
