Wendy's tests iced coffee

MEMPHIS Tenn. Wendy's reportedly is expanding tests of specialty beverages by selling new iced coffees in Phoenix, Pittsburgh and Kansas City, Mo., as 65 franchised Wendy’s in Mississippi have added the iced drinks and coffee versions of the signature Frosty called Frosty-cinos.

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that said franchisee Gene Carlisle is using McDonald's supplier, S&D Coffee Inc., for the Mississippi program, which has been testing iced coffees since spring and is selling four 20-ounce Frosty-cino varieties.

Last October, Carlisle told Nation's Restaurant News he had debuted the $3.69 Frosty-cinos at a high-grossing Wendy's in Starkville, Miss. Less thick than a standard Frosty so it can be sipped with a straw, the Frosty-cinos contain coffee flavoring and either chocolate or caramel, he said.

The Frosty-cino debut was part of Carlisle's launch of a new in-store coffee bar called Javaccino's. However, Carlisle has abandoned the in-store coffee bar test because of complexities in staffing and keeping its pastries fresh, the Journal reported.
