Whataburger buys San Antonio HQ

SAN ANTONIO Texas Whataburger Restaurants LP said Monday it has purchased a 140,000-square-foot building here to serve as its new headquarters.

The 700-unit burger chain announced in November it was moving from Corpus Christi, Texas, where it was founded in 1950, to San Antonio. The company said San Antonio offered Whataburger minimal impact from hurricanes, cost-efficient office space for an expanding headquarters staff of 250 people, ease of travel to the 10 states where the company has restaurants and a larger work force from which to recruit.

“This move helps provide long-term stability for our company and accommodates our plans for growth,” said Preston Atkinson, president and chief operating officer of Whataburger. “Purchasing this building is an important step in the process of moving our headquarters to San Antonio. We will begin moving into the building in June, and plan to have the transition complete by late summer.”

Terms of the purchase by the privately held company were not disclosed. The building is at 300 Concord Plaza Dr., at Jones-Maltsberger Road and U.S. 281.

Whataburger said about 60 percent of its 250-member home office staff will relocate to San Antonio. A closing date for the Corpus Christi office has not yet been announced.
