White Castle rolls back burger price to '80s level

COLUMBUS Ohio White Castle celebrated its 87th anniversary by lowering the price of its signature Slyder hamburgers to 27 cents each for 87 minutes at selected units this afternoon. The 413-unit chain has yet to reveal how many of the discounted burgers it sold between 2 p.m. and 3:27 p.m.

Patrons were limited to 10 burgers per order. The average non-discounted price for a White Castle Slyder is 53 cents, the chain said.

All White Castle units in Chicago, Cincinnati, Detroit and New York participated in the promotion. Some stores opted out in Columbus, Ohio; Indianapolis; Louisville, Ky.; Nashville, Tenn.; Minneapolis; northeast Ohio; New Jersey; and St. Louis, the company said.

White Castle, based here, said it chose today for the special deal because May is National Hamburger Month. It noted that the price of a Slyder did not reach 27 cents until the early 1980s.
