NRA Show to stay in Chicago through 2016

Association renews contract with McCormick Place

The National Restaurant Association will continue to host the annual Restaurant, Hotel-Motel Show in Chicago for at least five more years.

The NRA said it has signed an agreement to keep the show at McCormick Place through 2016.

NRA officials said earlier they had been considering moving the show to Orlando, Fla., or Las Vegas when its current contract in the Windy City expired in 2011. The NRA said exhibitors had been complaining about high labor costs at McCormick Place, among other things.

Dawn Sweeney, president and chief executive of the NRA, said Chicago city officials and McCormick Place have agreed to address those complaints.

“Along with all that the city of Chicago has to offer, McCormick Place…will now provide an exhibitor-friendly, hassle-free and cost-effective facility that makes for an outstanding trade show environment,” Sweeney said.

“McCormick Place has made a commitment to enhance its service and value at the NRA Show,” she said. “Allowing exhibitors the option to undertake a number of tasks they were previously precluded from engaging in, along with decreased foodservice and electrical costs, are among the concrete positive steps that will make the venue highly attractive, and that will place it on a level playing field with other cities.”

Chicago has been the home of the NRA Show since 1950.

While show attendance had fallen during the recession, the NRA said it attracted about 58,000 attendees in 2010, an increase of 6 percent from 2009, which translated to an estimated $86 million in local spending.
