Carl’s Jr. will roll out a Hand-Scooped Strawberry Pop-Tarts Ice Cream Sandwich to all its restaurants as a limited-time offer Wednesday.

The co-branded product, which has already drawn widespread buzz, features hand-scooped ice cream sandwiched between a halved Strawberry Pop-Tart. The chain first tested the item in April at a handful of Southern California locations.

News of the dessert test took off on social media, eventually making its way into late-night TV host Jimmy Kimmel’s monologue, when he pondered whether Carl’s Jr. developed the product after “reading my dream journal.”

By the time Kimmel mentioned the item, however, the test was over and many consumers were disappointed not to find the dessert in restaurants.

“It’s very rare when a new menu item that is being tested in a small number of restaurants goes viral to the degree this one did, but that’s exactly what happened with the new Hand-Scooped Strawberry Pop-Tarts Ice Cream Sandwich,” said Brad Haley, chief marketing officer for Carl’s Jr. parent CKE Restaurants Inc. “The idea of it just seemed to capture people’s imaginations, and it’s one of those things that just brings a smile to everyone’s face when they hear about it, if not a downright swoon in some cases. So, really, we had no choice but to make it available for all Carl’s Jr. customers to enjoy.”

On Wednesday, however, the product will be available throughout Carl’s Jr.’s 1,391-unit system. For a limited time, the dessert will be free with the purchase of a Super Bacon Cheeseburger combination meal at participating restaurants. The ice cream sandwich will be sold for a recommended $1.49 if purchased separately.

Carpinteria, Calif.-based CKE Restaurants Inc. operates and franchises 3,347 restaurants in 42 states and 28 foreign countries under the Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s brands.
