Papa John’s Pizza is kicking off another season as an official sponsor of the National Football League with a free pizza giveaway to members of its Papa Rewards loyalty network.

The Louisville, Ky.-based chain is making the announcement with spokesman Peyton Manning, quarterback for the Denver Broncos and a Denver-area franchisee.

Now through Sept. 15, the second Sunday of the NFL season, loyalty club members can order $15 or more worth of food from PapaJohns.com and use the promo code “TOUCHDOWN” to received 25 bonus Papa Rewards points, which can be redeemed for a free large pizza on a future order.

The deal is available to existing Papa Rewards members or new members who sign up before Sept. 15.

“This is an exciting time of year for every football fan, and we are pleased to add to the excitement by offering a free pizza to our existing loyal customers and new enrollees in the Papa Rewards loyalty program,” founder and chief executive John Schnatter said in a statement. “No matter how your team fares on the field this season, you’ll be a winner with this great offer.”

Papa John’s is promoting the deal with a commercial starring Schnatter and Manning. The pizza executive and the quarterback will appear in several commercials together this season, Papa John’s said.

The brand is not the only restaurant chain to stage a systemwide giveaway in September. Atlanta-based Chick-fil-A will run its “Breakfast on Us” giveaway Sept. 9-14 at its 1,735 restaurants in the United States. Customers may visit a special microsite, Chick-fil-AForBreakfast.com, reserve one of 10 breakfast entrees and a time to pick it up at their local restaurant, and redeem the offer during the week.

Long John Silver’s, also based in Louisville, will reprise its “National Talk Like a Pirate Day” event Sept. 19, giving away a free piece of its signature white fish to guests who talk like a pirate when ordering. The 1,275-unit brand just introduced a permanent new menu item, the Ciabatta Jack Sandwich.

Papa John’s has held free pizza giveaways tied to its sponsorship of the Super Bowl for the past three seasons. The NFL season begins Thursday, Sept. 5, when the Broncos host the most recent Super Bowl champion, the Baltimore Ravens, in Denver.

Papa John’s operates or franchises more than 3,220 restaurants in North America and about 1,000 units in its 34-country international division.
