Potbelly names Michael Coyne CFO

Coyne succeeds Charles Talbot at fast-casual sandwich chain

Potbelly Corp. has named Michael Coyne chief financial officer, effective May 1, the company said Wednesday.

Coyne will succeed former CFO Charles Talbot, who left the Chicago-based sandwich chain in March to take a position outside the restaurant industry.

“We are excited to have an executive of Mike's caliber join the ‘Potbelly Nation,’” Aylwin Lewis, Potbelly’s chairman and CEO, said in a statement.

"Mike has a strong track record as an operational and financial executive,” Lewis said. “His personal integrity and experience make him a strong cultural fit for our company and an outstanding addition to our management team.”

Coyne was most recently senior vice president for small business at Chicago-based CNA Financial Corp. He previously served as divisional chief financial officer of CNA’s property and casualty operations business. Coyne has also held positions at Sears Holdings Corp., Schering-Plough Corp., and Ernst & Young.

Potbelly, which went public in August 2013, ranked No. 116 in Nation’s Restaurant News’ Top 200 census, posting $304.8 million in U.S. systemwide sales in the year ended December 2013, an increase from $278.2 million in the prior-year period.

Potbelly owns and operates more than 300 restaurants nationwide and franchises more than 20 units domestically and in the Middle East.
