Taco Bell is testing a third flavor for its popular Doritos Locos Taco line that’s based on its chile-lime flavored Flamas chips.
Last week the Irvine, Calif.-based chain passed the milestone of selling 200 million Doritos Locos Tacos, making it the most successful product launch in the company’s history, said Rob Poetsch, spokesman for parent company Yum! Brands Inc. The original version of the item is based on Doritos Nacho Cheese flavored chips.

Taco Bell launched the Doritos line in March, and the company attributed a 13-percent increase in same-store sales during the chain’s second quarter to the new product.
Since the initial rollout of the Doritos Locos Tacos, the company has said line extensions would be coming. Taco Bell is currently testing a Cool Ranch flavor of the taco shell and may roll it out before the year’s end. Poetsch said the chain is also testing a Variety Taco Twelve Pack, which would allow customers to include combinations of their favorite Locos Tacos flavors for $12.99.
The Flamas Doritos Locos Tacos are being tested in stores in Toledo, Ohio at a price point of $1.29 or $1.69 for the Supreme version with sour cream and diced tomatoes — the same recommended price as the original Doritos Locos Tacos.
Taco Bell operates, franchises or licenses about 5,600 locations worldwide.
