$5 promo helps sales take flight at airports

The $5 price point, already popular among sandwich purveyors and casual dinnerhouses, is helping sales take off at airports.

The Wow! $5 Chow! promotion launched in late May at the Food & Shops at Philadelphia International Airport and LaGuardia Airport in New York are increasing sales at participating stores in both airports, officials said.

The program gives diners a choice of menu items during all dayparts at such eateries as Jet Rock Bar & Grill, Chick-fil-A, Cosi and Todd English’s Figs restaurant.

“We can tell you that we are currently conducting a poll to get more concrete information on traffic and sales, but the food shops have given us nothing but positive feedback,” a spokeswoman said. “Passengers have so far responded very favorably.”

The promotion, created by MarketPlace Development, which manages food and retail business at both LaGuardia and Philadelphia International airports, was designed to help travelers get more value when dining at airport restaurants.

“Now more than ever, it’s important to offer our passengers value,” said Lillian Tan, vice president and general manager of MarketPlace at LaGuardia.

Said Clarence LaJeune, president of MarketPlace in Philadelphia: “Offering the $5 menu will allow our passengers to stretch their travel dollars a little further and encourage them to explore the dining options at our airport.”

Newton, Mass.-based MarketPlace Development manages food and retail outlets for Philadelphia International Airport and seven terminals at LaGuardia Airport.
