Menu labeling proposed for Calif. multi-units

SACRAMENTO Calif. State Sen. Carole Migden has introduced legislation that would require chain restaurants across California to post the calorie content for each menu item.

Migden, a Democrat from San Francisco, contends Senate Bill 180 would help Californians make healthier decisions about the food they eat. The legislation would require restaurant concepts with more than five units in the state to post the information conspicuously so diners can make more informed choices.

Jot Condie, California Restaurant Association chief executive, said the bill would add millions to the cost of doing business in the state if restaurants were forced to redesign menu boards and conduct nutritional analysis.
