Taco Bell invites customers to pre-order its new mystery menu item

Customers will be able to pick up item before it is revealed in TV ad

Taco Bell fans who are dying to be the first to try what the chain is calling its “biggest food creation yet” will be able to pre-order it at Ta.co for pickup on Saturday  – even though they still won’t know what it is.

The mystery addition to the menu will be revealed to the world in a TV ad to air during the Super Bowl on Sunday.

The new food item is being kept so secret, in fact, even the actors in the commercial were not told what it is. Instead of holding the dish when the commercial was filmed, they held a green brick, company officials said.

Teaser ads this week feature the actors and their mysterious green bricks, attempting to fan the flames of excitement. The tagline: “You don’t even know what it is, but you want to eat it.”

Officials at the Irvine, Calif.-based chain, however, are so sure ardent fans will want to be the first to try it that customers are invited to pre-order it, starting today. Those customers will be able to pick up the not-yet-identified item at Taco Bell on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. local time, the day before the big reveal.

It is assumed those customers will let the secret out via social media. So by the time the Super Bowl ad airs, those paying attention will know what’s coming to Taco Bell’s menu.

Fans on social media have been speculating for weeks about what the new item might be, noting the various dishes that have been in test.

Many contend it will be the long-awaited Quesalupa, a quesadilla and chalupa mashup the chain said would be rolled out last year after tests in Toledo, Ohio. Other suggested contenders are the Croissant Taco, a taco with a croissant-like shell that has also been tested; or the Naked Crispy Chicken Taco with fried chicken as a shell substitute.

Whatever the item is, it will be available throughout the chain’s 6,000 locations on Feb. 8, the day after the Super Bowl, the company said.
