Established by the Sbarro family as an Italian grocery store in 1956 in Brooklyn, N.Y., the Melville, N.Y.-based brand has grown to become one of the largest Italian quick-service chains with more than 1,000 locations in the U.S. and 40 other countries. The privately held Sbarro specializes in New York-style pizzas, pasta dishes and other hot and cold Italian selections. For the year ended Dec. 2011, Sbarro had U.S. systemwide sales of $424.0 million. At the end of the period, the chain had 611 U.S. locations.
