For years any news story covering a private-equity deal in foodservice most likely included Bruckmann, Rosser, Sherrill & Co., Sun Capital Partners Inc., or Thomas H. Lee Partners. 
Fast-forward 10 years from now, and a new crop of funds may be leading the pack. Several young private-equity companies, such as Rosser Capital Partners, Nourish Capital and D Cubed Group LLC, are zeroing in on restaurant investments.

After years of chilly sales and icy credit conditions, analysts and industry watchers are expecting a thawing of sorts in 2011, with private-equity players continuing to inject much-needed heat into the restaurant sector.


Several firms went shopping in 2010, including 3G Capital with its $4 billion purchase of Burger King and, more recently, the Catterton Partners-led acquisition of Noodles & Company. Industry observers expect the spree to gather momentum in 2011.

Despite what some see as gradual improvements in the U.S. economy, consumers say they are still cutting back on purchases, including early morning coffee and dining out, a new Harris Poll survey shows.

The nationwide survey, conducted last month and published Wednesday, found that 48 percent of the 2,227 adult respondents said they are brown-bagging lunch instead of purchasing a meal, compared with 45 percent of respondents who responded that was in February.
