Illinois soon could become the second state to ban the sale of food containing trans fats, if legislation passed Wednesday in the Illinois House of Representatives passes the state Senate and becomes law.

The “Artificial Trans Fat Restriction Act,” an amendment to House Bill 1600, would bar the sale at restaurants or school vending machines of items containing more than 0.5 grams of trans fat per serving or that contain vegetable shortening, margarine or partially hydrogenated vegetable oil.

Even before the new year put dieting resolutions into effect, a study by The NPD Group found that consumers were ordering fewer carbonated soft drinks, hot dogs, fried chicken and French fries and ordering more milk, grilled chicken and grilled chicken sandwiches, nonfried fish, breakfast cereals, fruit and yogurt.

While San Francisco’s proposal to restrict the use of toys and other “incentives” in the sale of restaurant kids’ meals may not see formal hearings until next month, agitation within some foodservice industry quarters is already running high.

San Francisco Supervisor Eric Mar and two colleagues submitted this month a draft ordinance that in many ways mirrors a law in nearby Santa Clara County, restricting marketing through children’s meals that do not meet specified nutritional guidelines.
