The 2017 class of Breakout Brands includes some of the buzziest concepts in foodservice. These are the brands the restaurant industry is talking about — or should be talking about.

Whether it’s the food, the service, the funding, the leadership or the use of technology, these restaurants are onto something. The Breakout Brand chains demonstrate the evolution and variety of offerings within foodservice. And while they are currently small — each chain has 10 units or fewer — they have big plans to grow.

Their menus include Indian kati rolls, premium sandwiches, Cajun brunch and artisanal ice cream. We couldn’t talk about emerging chains without looking at the fast-growing chicken space, and indeed, this list includes two very different chicken concepts.

The Breakout Brand leadership varies as much as the food with Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, a “Top Chef” contestant and a law school dropout behind three of the 2017 concepts.
