The first brick-and-mortar location of Tacos Tequila Whiskey, originally branded as Pinche Taqueria, opened in 2011, after gaining a following as a food truck. The following year, Bon Appétit named it one of the country’s best new restaurants.
The brand is up to four locations — three in its hometown of Denver and one in Phoenix — and it may open a fifth restaurant in 2019. The chain is eyeing further growth in Phoenix and another undisclosed market.
Tacos, priced between $3.50 and $4.50 each, include traditional carne asada, carnitas and barbacoa, as well as less traditional, sweet-and-sour pork belly “agridulce, ” with candied garlic, cabbage-cilantro slaw and braising liquid.
The restaurant also does a robust brunch business with breakfast tacos and cocktails that riff on Bloody Marys and mimosas. Margaritas are popular, too, as are more specialized tequila- and whiskey-based cocktails.
