Chipotle Mexican Grill rolls out plant-based chorizo LTO

Pea-based protein is promoted with ingredients ‘grown on a farm, not in a lab’

Just in time for Veganuary, Chipotle Mexican Grill on Monday rolled out its new plant-based chorizo, which is available for a limited time at all U.S. locations.

The long-anticipated protein, which was tested in Denver and Indianapolis in 2021, is the second vegan option to go national at the fast-casual chain, following the spiced organic tofu it called Sofritas, which was introduced in 2014. The average price of a plant-based chorizo entrée is $9.10.

The new chorizo is made from peas, with a kick from chipotle peppers, tomato paste, garlic, smoked paprika and extra virgin olive oil. The protein is certified vegan and offers 16 grams of protein per 4-ounce serving. Made without artificial flavors, colors, preservatives, grains, gluten or soy, Chipotle officials note that it includes ingredients “grown on a farm, not in a lab” — no doubt a dig at plant-based alternatives like Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods.

“Creating a delicious plant-based protein that sizzles on the grill with the robust flavor and texture profile chorizo-lovers expect was a real challenge,” said Nevielle Panthaky, Chipotle’s vice president of culinary. “Our culinary team has worked relentlessly for years to develop this breakthrough plant-based chorizo recipe that is uniquely Chipotle and aligns with the brand’s industry-leading Food with Integrity standards."

The Newport Beach, Calif.-based chain is spotlighting the new chorizo in three preconfigured Lifestyle Bowl options available exclusively on the Chipotle app and website.

  • Whole30 Salad Bowl: Supergreens lettuce blend, plant-based chorizo, fresh tomato salsa, fajita veggies and guacamole.
  • Vegetarian Bowl: Supergreens blend, pinto beans, plant-based chorizo, fresh tomato salsa, fajita veggies and cheese.
  • Vegan Bowl: White rice, black beans, plant-based chorizo, corn salsa, fresh tomato salsa, shredded romaine lettuce.

Through Jan. 9, delivery on plant-based chorizo orders are available for $0 through the website and app. The chain is also offering $0 delivery on all Lifestyle Bowl orders through the app or website through Jan. 31. Higher menu prices apply for delivery and there may be service charges and other exemptions.

Chipotle operates nearly 2,900 restaurants in the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom, France and Germany.
