Would you like to work where you can have three organic meals each day, unlimited snacks, a gym where you can work off the unlimited snacks, a car wash, nap rooms, four weeks paid vacation and take your dog to work? No kidding, so would I! To get that dream job, we just need to get in line with the 2.7 million other applicants aspiring to work at Google, ranked once again at the top of this year’s 100 Best Companies to Work For, presented by Fortune and research partner Great Place to Work.

Cue significant eye rolling, which is what most service industry employers do whenever Google is mentioned as the leading example of an enlightened, modern workplace. But in this hyper-competitive labor market we can’t afford to ignore examples of those winning in the workplace — no matter where we find them.

People Report, a TDn2K company, has been studying the restaurant industry for almost two decades. We have learned that top performers steal ideas shamelessly from competitors. Read on to see what top companies are doing to attract the best people. Then go ahead and steal their ideas.

Wegmans Food Markets is perennially mentioned as a great place to work. Wegmans has over 44,000 employees and voluntary turnover for full-time hourly workers is 5 percent. Compare that to an overall voluntary turnover of 73 percent for restaurant companies that are People Report members.

How are they doing it? Average annual compensation for a full-time hourly worker is $34,884, according to Fortune.

And many of Wegmans’ innovative employee benefits can be inexpensively duplicated, like fitness classes, schedule flexibility, flu shots, elder care resources and discounted tickets. Wegmans also regularly schedules “Open Door Days,” when employees have access to their managers and company leadership.

Another repeat performer in the grocery segment is Nugget Markets. A smaller family business, with 17 stores, Nugget has 1,600 employees, 67 percent of which are full-time, and reports 8 percent annual turnover.

This culture is significantly focused on daily communication, recognition and fun. Digital message boards share videos and photos, announce birthdays, anniversaries and recognition of employee accomplishments. A core value is RAVE: Respect, Appreciate, Value, Everyone!

Nugget is one of the only companies on the Fortune 100 list that still pays 100 percent of employee health care coverage, and pays 80 percent for dependents. It is a great source of pride that the employees have the same coverage as the CEO. Last year Nugget had 13,000 applications for 588 openings, and filled 25 percent of them with referrals.

Hotels are another big competitor for restaurant employees, and five of them made the 2016 list.  The smallest, Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants, was ranked the highest by its employees.

The company has a comprehensive benefits package, but it is the investment in lifestyle that seems to be making the difference for the brand. An amazing 99 percent of employees believe their workplace provides “a great atmosphere” and say they take “great pride” in working there, according to Great Place to Work data.

The company goes to great lengths to not only allow, but also encourage workers to follow their individual paths. They provide tuition reimbursement, child and elder care resources, paid sabbaticals, adoption, parental and bereavement leave, and benefits for same-sex couples.

At Quik Trip, more than 60 percent of the convenience retailer’s 20,000 employees are under the age of 25. Yet their voluntary turnover for full-time employees is an astonishing 13 percent. The company received almost 500,000 applications for 3,500 openings last year, and hired 37 percent through referrals, according to Fortune.

Quick Trip offers terrific benefits, which include a network of doctors who can typically accept an employee or family member on the same day — for free. Tuition assistance is available up to $4,400. And the company is committed to developing their talent pipeline from within, and supporting workers as they move through their career growth.

A very different kind of retailer, Recreational Equipment Inc./REI employs 12,000 passionate outdoor enthusiasts, with a mission to “Inspire, Educate & Outfit for a lifetime of outdoor adventure and stewardship.”

It is a mantra that they live, and their culture and benefits are designed to support fulfilling that purpose. Last year 253 REI employees took a month long sabbatical, paid for, that included a 50-percent discount on an adventure trip. Let’s not forget that on Black Friday all stores were closed so employees could enjoy time in the outdoors with family.

One restaurant company was included on the 2016 list, The Cheesecake Factory. This was no surprise to anyone at TDn2K, as this brand has been awarded a People Report Best Practices award a record five times. They also were the recipient of our elite Diamond Catalyst award in 2014.

The almost 40-year-old iconic concept somehow just keeps getting better, with a total focus on the connection between the employee experience and the guest experience. Health insurance and a comprehensive wellness program are made available to staff members and managers who work at least 25 hours a week. Managers are encouraged to give staff enough hours to qualify for insurance, and kitchen staff members are eligible for benefits after only two months of service. Full-time hourly employees receive a remarkable 151 hours of professional development each year.

The Cheesecake Factory received almost a half million applications last year for 17,000 openings, according to Fortune. Of course, the company is also incredibly profitable and continues to grow.

Author Stephen Covey famously said “You can’t win in the marketplace until you first win in the workplace.” Restaurants may have different unit economics than the companies profiled in this story, but the restaurant industry has always possessed endless ingenuity and capacity to reinvent.

You may not be able to provide Google’s famous benefits, but you can always adopt one of the company’s founding values — not being afraid to say, “We love our employees.”
