Burger King/Carrols lawsuit, Starbucks hire, indies’ rent woes

Restaurant Brands International Inc. used its control over Carrols Restaurant Group Inc., a franchisee of Burger King and Popeyes locations that it acquired in May, to force the company into a $1 billion buyout, according to a civil lawsuit filed earlier this month.

Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol is poaching former Chipotle colleagues to join him at the Seattle coffee chain. Former Chipotle marketing executive Tressie Lieberman is joining Niccol as Starbucks’ first executive vice president, global chief brand officer starting November 4.

Forty three percent of independent restaurant operators couldn’t pay their rent in September, according to a monthly survey by the business networking platform Alignable. That’s actually a bit better than the 45% of restaurants that were delinquent on rent in August, but it’s up from the summer lows of 36% in June and 33% in July.

Some restaurant executives believe traffic will return to restaurants after the election. In a recent interview Red Robin CEO G.J. Hart said he thinks the uncertainty surrounding this election has consumers skittish, but once things normalize, they’ll be more willing to spend on discretionary items.
