Food safety, Bojangles-AI, Starbucks’ sustainability

The Restaurant Daily podcast presents the day’s top headlines

Two prominent members of Congress have called for revamping the way food is safeguarded in the U.S., a development that could realize safety advocates’ longtime call for consolidating federal protections under a single watchdog agency.

Bojangles is speeding ahead with drive-thru AI. The chicken and biscuit chain is rolling out its AI order-taking bot, Bo-Linda, to hundreds of restaurants after more than a year of testing.

The slate of Starbucks sustainability announcements continues. First, the company announced another reusable cup pilot. Then, last week, Starbucks announced further investment in electric vehicle charging stations, and now the coffee giant has unveiled six new solar energy projects in partnership with Nexamp that will provide electricity coverage for 170 Starbucks stores in Illinois.

There’s a tsunami of national food holidays in the summer, with everything from french fries to ice cream, caviar, tequila, chili dogs, creme brûlée and Spam celebrated in July and August. While some of these designated days seem pretty silly, restaurants that promote them with menu tie-ins can reap serious rewards.
