Restaurant traffic trends, the return of Steak and Ale, and mourning Naomi Pomeroy

The Restaurant Daily podcast presents the day’s top headlines

Today on the Restaurant Daily podcast, we have an update on restaurant traffic trends, including some good news. Fast-food traffic declined 2.3% in the second quarter, as concern over prices kept customers away. But that was also an improvement from the 3.5% decline in the first quarter. The exact reason for the improvement is uncertain.

A long-defunct chain returns with a new Minnesota location. Dallas-based Legendary Restaurant Brands has revived the once-closed Steak and Ale, in Burnsville, Minn., south of Minneapolis. The brand was created in 1966 by Norman Brinker and was closed in 2008 when Plano, Texas-based parent Metromedia Restaurant Group worked its way through Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

And the community is mourning the loss of a beloved chef. Naomi Pomeroy died on Saturday during a tubing accident near her hometown of Corvallis, Oregon. She was 49. Pomeroy was a beloved chef best known for her restaurant Beast.
