NYC culinary schools offer deals for students

NEW YORK To help struggling students during the recession, two culinary schools here are reducing tuition for certain programs and offering credit counseling to help them obtain loans.

The French Culinary Institute of New York City said Thursday it is lopping off $4,000 from the $32,700 in tuition it charges for its evening pastry arts classes beginning in March.

FCI and its sister school, The Italian Culinary Academy, also have retained a credit counselor to analyze the credit scores of prospective students to assist them in determining their borrowing power. Students who take advantage of the service will receive a free credit review to help them understand what they can do to improve their credit scores. The schools also will give a 50-percent discount to students who decide to pay for a credit improvement service.

Both schools are located in the International Culinary Center in New York. The Italian Culinary Academy offers courses for amateurs, while FCI offers a rigorous six-month, full-time program by day, and a nine-month, part-time program at night in culinary and pastry arts.

“The school understands the economic hardships right now and wants to help students in any way that they can,” said spokeswoman Alexandra Boardley said.
